IRS problem. Any advice ?

So I called the IRS to get a total amount duue from any and all past taxes me and my wife owed. 3 different times I called and each time they gave me a number that was the same. Like 2500. We paid it and now we got a letter saying we owe $5000.. From 20009 and 10. Now they want to garnish our wages if not paid by July. I feel helpless
