Is the ending to "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" actually possible?

In the end of the movie, Jack Nicholson attempts to murder Nurse Ratched, so they give him a surgery of sorts to make him brain dead. Do mental institutes actually do this when this scenario occurs? It doesn't seem like something that would be legal in America, and it is just a movie of course, but just to be sure...
