Have you had experiences with people of "short man syndrome"?

Yeah, that's definitely short man syndrome, and it's the really awkward type since he behaves like a little girl. Your ex probably had an inferiority complex and was extremely uncomfortable with his height. I'd say you really can't blame him for acting that way, but you definitely didn't have to put up with it - tolerating someone trying to steal your place as the woman in the relationship. Most short guys get over it since they have to man up and stop compensating in petty ways, but he didn't reach that point. If I was dating a woman who looked taller than me, I'd be glad since it shows just how much confidence I have to not care.
